Celebrated Bangladeshi printmaker Kamruzzaman Sagar recently received the Kazi Anowar Hossain Award for his impactful lithograph titled 'Pandemic 20' at the 24th National Art Exhibition 2021, organized by the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA). The award ceremony took place at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in the Segunbagicha area of the capital. Kamruzzaman Sagar's artwork presents a unique perspective on the destruction caused by the pandemic, focusing on the viewpoint of birds. Unlike conventional narratives that predominantly highlight human suffering during pandemics, the artist sheds light on the often overlooked impact on the animal kingdom and nature.
The awarded artwork holds significance for its bold portrayal, depicting birds as silent observers of the devastation wrought upon human civilization, their eyes seemingly shedding tears as they witness the consequences. Some birds may have met their demise due to what the artist refers to as "man-made crises." Kamruzzaman Sagar is known for his deliberate choice of language in conveying the narratives of his prints vividly. His extensive study of figure movements, various bird forms, and composition arrangements reflects his meticulous approach to artistic expression.
